How an MSc can boost your career in banking

MSc Business with Consulting alum, Rinor Musliu, breaks down his achieving his Master’s degree set him up for a successful future.

When I began exploring Master’s business programmes, I wasn’t just searching for academic prestige — I wanted a place that would challenge me to think bigger, connect globally, and prepare me for real impact. That’s why Warwick Business School stood out.

WBS offered more than just a degree. It provided an ecosystem — one that balances academic excellence with real-world learning, diverse perspectives, and leadership development.

The MSc programme didn’t just teach content; it taught me how to think strategically, make decisions under pressure, and collaborate in cross-functional teams — all skills that have proven essential in my current role as an Associate Banker at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

What can MSc Business with Consulting do for me?

Throughout the programme, I was immersed in case studies, group projects, and simulations that closely mirrored the kind of transactions and client interactions I now manage. The curriculum helped me sharpen my analytical thinking and deepen my understanding of sustainable finance and development — two pillars of EBRD’s mission.

But the experience at WBS extended far beyond the academic.

Living at Heronbank and being part of a close-knit, international cohort gave me space to reflect, challenge myself, and grow as a person. I took on a leadership role in the Student-Staff Liaison Committee (SSLC), joined societies, and participated in events that helped build my confidence and communication skills.

One of the most lasting takeaways from Warwick was learning to ask better questions. In complex banking and investment environments, it’s easy to default to assumptions or past models. But WBS encouraged me to pause, reframe, and dig deeper — a habit that’s now second nature when assessing credit risk, structuring financial models, or navigating cross-border projects.

After graduating, I transitioned into a fast-paced advisory environment and eventually into my current role at EBRD — where I work with clients, assess investments, and contribute to the economic development of emerging markets.

Will a Master’s help my career?

Every day, I apply lessons rooted in both the academic and practical experiences I gained at Warwick.

The global network was also a defining feature. My peers came from all over the world — each with different industries, perspectives, and ambitions. Those connections still shape the way I think and collaborate, whether I’m working on cross-regional deals or exploring new investment strategies.

What should I expect at Warwick?

Looking ahead, I remain focused on creating impact through finance — especially in regions where sustainable development and private sector growth are tightly linked. Warwick gave me the tools, the mindset, and the values to step into this role with confidence and vision.

To those considering an MSc at Warwick: go for it — but go all in. The opportunities are endless, but they don’t chase you.

Warwick meets you halfway. You bring the drive. It brings the platform. What you build from there is up to you — and it can be truly life-changing.
