Embarking on an MBA journey is a significant decision—one that shapes careers, expands networks, and transforms perspectives. My experience on the Global Online MBA at Warwick Business School (WBS) was nothing short of transformative, providing me with the tools, connections, and insights that have profoundly influenced my professional and personal growth.
A bit about me
My name is Adesuwa Obariase. I am a Chartered Accountant with over 15 years of professional experience across banking, insurance, infrastructure, public-private partnerships, and international NGOs. Though I began my academic journey with a degree in Chemistry Education, I transitioned into the accounting and finance field four years after graduation, undergoing a three-year intensive training. In 2008, I became a Chartered Accountant certified by the national accounting body in Nigeria.
I currently serve as the Chief Financial Officer at Protection Plus Services in Lagos, Nigeria. The company operates in the Maritime Security and Personal Protection space. As a CFO, my role extends far beyond traditional accounting practices. I am actively involved in strategic planning, capital restructuring, fund management, investment decisions, expansion strategy, and stakeholder management. The knowledge and skills gained from WBS have been instrumental in delivering value acoss these areas.
Why Warwick?
What attracted me to Warwick Business School was my desire to take my career to a global level and transition into the international development space—potentially working for the United Nations. I saw Warwick and the MBA programme as the perfect launchpad into the global community.
The international ranking of WBS was impressive, and I was particularly drawn to the flexible blended learning format that allowed me to retain my job while pursuing the programme. I also wanted to bring an international touch to my already thriving accounting career and knew that earning a globally recognized degree from a world-renowned university would pave the way for future opportunities in international development.
Academic rigor and practical learning
The MBA curriculum at Warwick seamlessly blends academic rigor with real-world application. I enjoyed all the modules, but two in particular stood out: Organisational Behaviour and the Economics of Wellbeing. These modules resonated with me deeply due to their relevance and the diverse perspectives they offered regarding human nature, culture and happiness.
The programme's use of case studies, group discussions, and practical projects ensured that learning went beyond theory. Live business projects, in particular, allowed me to apply classroom knowledge to real-life challenges, sharpening my analytical and strategic thinking
Culture and exposure
I would describe my time at Warwick Business School in two words: culture and exposure. The learning experience was deeply intertwined with cultural exchanges, allowing me to appreciate the uniqueness and commonalities of different worldviews. I learned to value diversity, both in thought and in approach—an invaluable lesson that shapes how I lead today.
My passion for international development and causes dedicated to the betterment of mankind further deepened at WBS. The cultural richness and exposure I gained were key contributing factors in this journey.
The impact on my career
As CFO of Protection Plus Services, my daily work spans strategic leadership and decision-making. The learnings from WBS—especially in areas like leadership, corporate governance, and financial strategy—have helped me become a more well-rounded and forward-thinking leader.
