Building a sense of belonging at WBS

08 May 2025

Warwick Business School (WBS) is a global community of students from all over the world. While starting university is an exciting adventure, it can sometimes feel overwhelming. Between adjusting to a new education system, adapting to a different city or culture, facing language barriers, or simply navigating social circles, students (both home and international) might find it challenging to feel like they truly belong.

The good news is that belonging is not something a person either has or does not have, but something they build. Connecting with people who understand our journey, embracing new experiences, and finding ways to overcome challenges can transform the university experience. This blog will share practical ways to help all students at WBS feel at home, even when far from home.

How to build belonging on campus?

Suna Choi, MSc Student: One of the best ways to build a sense of belonging on campus is by getting involved in student societies and cultural groups. At the University of Warwick, a wide variety of societies accommodate different interests, from sports and hobbies to cultural and nationality-based clubs. Joining these groups can help students meet like-minded people, share experiences, and feel more at home. Attending events, volunteering, or even joining a society committee can strengthen connections and build a strong support network. During my first term, I attended Korean Society events, where I met other Korean students, cooked Korean dishes together, and found comfort in familiar traditions.

Ana Gabriela Zuniga, Undergraduate Student: Another way to build a sense of belonging is by fully immersing yourself in uni life and engaging with diverse cultures. Participate in the traditional student activities at Warwick, like attending balls, joining societies, playing sports, going to the circle and exploring different events on or off campus. Take the opportunity to learn about your friends’ cultures, whether that’s through Sunday roasts, travel, or new experiences. Stepping outside your comfort zone and forming friendships with people from different backgrounds can enrich your university experience and create a deeper sense of connection. During my time at Warwick, some of my most cherished memories came from trying new activities with friends and actively being a member of the Warwick Polo sports club.

Overcoming challenges - Our experiences as WBS students

Suna Choi, MSc Student: One major challenge students at Warwick may face is homesickness, which can affect mental health and academic performance. To manage this, students should actively seek support systems on campus. Warwick offers international student support services, counselling, and buddy schemes to help ease the transition. Keeping in touch with family and friends through video calls can also provide reassurance. Moreover, exploring the local area, attending cultural events, and forming friendships with both home and international students can create a sense of belonging. For me, regularly playing with the Squash Society not only helped me stay active but also relieved academic stress, making my university experience far more enjoyable.

Ana Gabriela Zuniga, MSc Student: Another challenge students might face is impostor syndrome, the feeling of not belonging or not being as capable as others. This self-doubt can be overwhelming, especially in a highly competitive academic environment. To overcome it, students should remember that they were accepted for a reason and that everyone, regardless of background, faces challenges. Seeking support from personal tutors, student networks, and university resources can be helpful. Engaging in societies, participating in extracurricular activities, and celebrating achievements (big or small) can help build confidence. Remember! Every student at WBS brings unique perspectives and strengths to the university community, and we all deserve to be here just as much as anyone else.

You belong here!

Belonging isn’t about fitting in perfectly; it's about finding people, places, and moments that make you feel at home. You'll gradually build meaningful connections as you engage with new people, explore different cultures, and step outside your comfort zone. There may be moments of uncertainty or homesickness, but remember, there are people around you who support and welcome you. Keep an open heart, embrace new friendships, and trust that, little by little, you are creating a space where you truly belong. Your journey may not always be easy, but each step forward strengthens your sense of connection. In time, you’ll look back and realise how far you’ve come!
