How the Foundation Year has empowered me

27 March 2025

We are excited to be celebrating the WBS Foundation Year 10th anniversary. Foundation Year student Libby shares her journey on the Foundation Year and how it has impacted her life so far.

Beginning my journey at Warwick Business School through the Foundation Year was a life-changing experience that impacted me in ways I never imagined. It was a path that started with doubt and uncertainty, but it quickly became one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Looking back, I’ve never regretted choosing this route. The friendships I’ve made, the opportunities I’ve received and the personal growth I’ve experienced have laid the perfect foundation for my future.

Coming from state schools, I faced challenges that made me question my abilities. Some teachers told me after moving high schools that I wouldn’t succeed, and they doubted me, and those doubts lingered for years. However, Warwick Business School’s Foundation Year gave me a fresh start and surrounded me with mentors who believed in me. They didn’t see my past struggles as barriers—they saw my potential. The faculty didn’t just teach me; they empowered me to succeed.

One moment that stands out is being recognised for my efforts and receiving an award for being one of the highest-achieving students. That moment was a powerful validation that I belonged in an academic environment where I felt seen and valued. Unlike the teachers who doubted me in the past, the staff at Warwick Business School encouraged me to push my limits, step out of my comfort zone, and aim higher. Their continuous support has been a driving force behind my growth.

The friendships I’ve made during the Foundation Year are another significant part of this journey. Starting university surrounded by unfamiliar faces was daunting, but the Foundation Year created a welcoming environment where I connected with people who have become my closest friends. I never would have believed anyone, at the start of it all, that the people I met in my first week here would play such significant roles in my life, but I’m glad they do. These friendships have evolved into lifelong connections. We’ve shared moments of joy, supported each other through tough times, and celebrated achievements together. Unlike friendships that came and went in my past, I know these will stay.

Beyond friendships, the opportunities that have come my way through the Foundation Year have been life-changing. Warwick Business School’s strong network opened doors to internships and scholarships I never imagined. The internships allowed me to apply classroom learning to real-world situations. The scholarships provided financial relief and, more importantly, reaffirmed that hard work is rewarded. These experiences have significantly boosted my confidence and prepared me to tackle future challenges.

When I first arrived at WBS, I questioned whether I belonged to such a prestigious institution. However, the Foundation Year’s tailored curriculum and supportive environment helped me develop core skills like time management, critical thinking, and communication skills that I rely on daily. The programme has helped me grow as a person. People who knew me before have noticed the change—how much happier and more confident I’ve become.

Everyone involved in the Foundation Year needs to know that their work goes far beyond academics. The program truly changes lives. It’s given me the chance to form meaningful connections, seize invaluable opportunities, and become more confident. The mentors, staff, and friends I’ve met have all played a role in shaping who I am today. As I look to the future, I know the Foundation Year has set me on a path to success. I’m deeply grateful for the impact it has had on my life, and I wouldn’t change this experience for the world.

So, I just want to say a huge thank you to everyone who’s been part of the Foundation Year.  You might not see it, but you’re not just sponsors or lecturers— you’ve truly changed lives and given people like me, who were once overlooked and doubted, a real chance to succeed.
