How to Be Environmentally Friendly at University: My Essential Tips
As the effects of climate change and pollution are becoming more visible around the world, I know that I have a responsibility to take care of my environment, not just for myself but for others. However, many people think that being sustainable is difficult and cumbersome, but that's not always the case! There are always some small, easy steps you can take to help save the planet, and even reap some benefits yourself.
Take public transport
Taking an Uber is always tempting to me, especially if the weather is rough or if I’m tired, but using public transport can slash your carbon footprint significantly. With the new electric U1/U2 routes, taking the bus to uni instead of driving is more eco-friendly than ever before. The same applies to nightlife and events outside of uni. Taking the bus, train, or even walking is much better for you and the planet.
Let there be light
Don’t keep yourself trapped in the darkness, open your curtains and let in the natural light during the day. Not only has natural daylight been proven to positively affect your mood, health, and sleeping pattern, it also saves on electricity. Not only do you save on your utility bill, but you also save the environment. This is your sign to switch the lights off and bask in the sunny spring weather instead!
Reduce, reuse, recycle
Warwick makes it easier than ever to recycle your packaging. If you buy study snacks from Rootes, make sure to dispose of them properly in the provided general waste, paper waste, and recyclable waste bins located in buildings like the WBS café, Rootes Learning Grid, etc. Why not try bringing your own snacks in reusable containers for a change and reduce packaging waste entirely? That infamous pesto pasta is as easy to carry in a reusable container as it is to make!
Too Good To Go
I’m sure everyone’s heard of this infamous app by now. For those of you who are out of the loop, Too Good to Go is an app where you can buy anything from restaurant-quality meals to pastries from local cafés, at a discounted price. Developed to reduce food waste, local businesses and restaurants sell packages of food expiring within the next couple of days at heavily discounted prices. This gives you access to a variety of different meals at affordable price points every day! Additionally, many items may be sold at their “best before” date, but if stored properly, can actually last for weeks longer. Reducing food waste and getting a bargain, what's not to like!
