Undergraduate student Darsh Haria shares his top tips for getting the most out of an open day.
My experience studying BSc Management at WBS on a sports scholarship
Undergraduate student Ada Bhasin reflects on her decision to study BSc Management at WBS and how receiving a sports scholarship has shaped both her academic and athletic journey.
Why did you choose WBS and what course do you study?
Choosing WBS was a decision shaped by both my academic interests and my love for cricket. I had always been keen on coming to the UK to study, mainly because of its rich cricket culture and strong connection to the sport. Academically, I knew I wanted to pursue a business-related degree, but I wasn’t too sure about which field I wanted to specialise in. While researching top universities in the UK, WBS stood out, especially for its BSc Management course.
What really attracted me was the way the course is structured. Instead of forcing you to choose one path straight away, the first-year modules expose you to a bit of everything, which really helps in understanding and exploring the different areas of management. Furthermore, with each module selection cycle, WBS provides clear guidance and support on how to choose subjects to build different pathways. This flexibility made me feel a lot less pressured about having everything figured out and was something that I didn’t find elsewhere.
Finally, WBS’s high rankings, a dedicated CareersPlus team, the option of a placement year and the diverse community made WBS feel like the right choice for me.
How did you find out about the sports scholarship application process, and how has this supported your student journey?
Sport has always been a huge part of my life, especially cricket, so it was really important for me to choose a university that would support me and help me grow not just academically, but also as an athlete. Since cricket is still quite male-dominated, I wanted to make sure the university I chose would genuinely support female athletes. I found out about Warwick’s Sports Scholarship soon after accepting my offer and applied straight away.
I am extremely grateful to have received the scholarship which has had a huge impact on my university experience. Moving from Singapore, where cricket is played all year round, to England during winter was a massive change. Indoor training and a completely new setup felt quite challenging at first, but the support from the scholarship made the transition much easier. Having access to the gym, structured strength and conditioning sessions, physiotherapy, nutrition and psychology workshops, as well as Performance Lifestyle Support, have helped me keep working on my goal to excel as a cricketer not just through playing the game, but by growing as an athlete during off-season as well.
What are your 3 key highlights or memories from university so far?
One of my main highlights so far has been representing Warwick in my first-ever BUCS women’s indoor cricket tournament. It was a surreal experience wearing the Warwick jersey and adapting to a different format of the game from what I had been so used to playing.
Another standout has been the incredible facilities available on campus, especially the Sports and Wellness Hub. The gym has everything you could possibly need as a student or athlete, which really motivated me to continue working hard and try new things. I’ve also really enjoyed the “This Girl Can” initiative, which encouraged me to try new activities like Hyrox and spin sessions, and even get back into sports, like football, that I hadn’t played in years.
On the academic side, the WBS career fairs have been super helpful, giving me early exposure to big firms and different career options. In the first few weeks of Term 1, I had the opportunity to speak to representatives and learn about job pathways at major companies such as Barclays, HSBC and Deloitte, among many others. This gave me a clear starting point to begin planning my career from the first year itself, helping me understand what skills and experiences I should start building for the future. It has kept me on track and motivated, rather than leaving everything until the final year, and has helped me feel more prepared and less overwhelmed about the graduate job process.
Why would you recommend WBS to prospective students?
I would highly recommend WBS to prospective students because it offers a really supportive and well-rounded university experience. The teaching style at WBS is hands-on and engaging, with personalised support to guide you through every stage of your degree, so you never feel lost or overwhelmed. With its strong global reputation, highly ranked courses and experienced professors, you won’t second-guess your learning and will feel well prepared for the future. WBS also places a strong emphasis on employability, so they offer career support from your very first year with guidance always available whenever you’re unsure about academics or career plans.
Beyond academics, the campus is a huge bonus. WBS is a modern building with excellent facilities, including large lecture halls, quiet study spaces and countless fairs and community events that create a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. It’s conveniently located just a short walk from central campus and is close to nearby towns and major cities like Birmingham and London, offering the perfect balance between focused study and a vibrant student life.
