Studying BSc Accounting & Finance: My journey so far

24 February 2025

Undergraduate student Min Ling, currently studying on the BSc Accounting & Finance Programme at Warwick Business School, shares why she chose this course, and what she's enjoying most about it so far.

If you ask 15-year-old me what I wanted to become when I grow up, I will probably shake my head and say, “I have no idea.” To be honest, my dreams changed every year, from wanting to be a police officer to a forensic pathologist. None of them lasted more than a year until I began studying accounting in high school - to my surprise, balancing statements gave me so much thrill - yes, I’m being serious! A huge part of that was thanks to my accounting teacher, who made debits and credits sound so intriguing.

What made me so sure of accounting was when I did a coursework for my final examination in high school. I had the opportunity to piece figures together in the financial statements, which gave me a taste of how accounting works in the real world. The excitement I felt throughout the project told me that accounting was more than just a subject - it was something I wouldn’t mind doing every day.

When it came to selecting my top 5 universities for UCAS, it wasn’t a random pick. A senior from high school who went to University of Warwick told me that Warwick wasn’t a university where you only study all day every day, but it was packed with lots of fun activities and opportunities to make the most of university life. Her stories made Warwick sound like the perfect mix of study and good times, so I began researching further. The more I researched, the more certain I was that Warwick was going to be my number-one choice for UCAS.

Ever since I officially became a student at Warwick Business School, there are so many things that I love about my course, but if I had to choose, I’d say our lecturers are the highlight of studying here!

I came into university with the stereotype that lecturers wouldn’t care about their students. I thought they would just give their lecture and leave – well, that’s what I’ve seen in movies. But I have been so pleasantly surprised at Warwick. Our lecturers are approachable and they make an effort to connect with us. Can you believe they try to remember our names and are genuinely excited when we ask them questions? It’s so nice to know they truly care about our wellbeing and they made me enjoy going to lectures and seminars so much more.

Another aspect I enjoy is the group work in our modules. Usually, for me, group projects are always a nightmare, especially when people don’t contribute. However, it turned out to be one of the best parts of the course. I got to meet and interact with new people from different backgrounds and made more friends outside of my circle. I never had to worry about free-riding because our module leaders were always there to sort things out, plus we had a peer assessment system which made sure everyone got a fair evaluation. This system reassured many of us that the workload is shared and it has made working with others a lot more fun and productive.

If you hear about the course Accounting and Finance, you would probably think we only learn about financial reporting, financial management, and anything along those lines. I’m here to tell you that at WBS, you get the chance to learn about so many interesting things beyond accounting and finance. My two favourite modules are Business Law and Business Taxation—both of which are different from regular accounting. I love the variety of modules we get at WBS!

Looking back, choosing this course at Warwick Business School has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. The lecturers are amazing, and campus life is never a bore - even group projects have been more fun than I expected! So far, I’ve spent two enjoyable years at Warwick, and I’m excited to make more memories in my final year!
