MSc Business with Sustainability

The module aims to provide a comprehensive introduction to financial reporting and management accounting. 

By the end of the module, you will be able to prepare simple versions of the main financial statements: use financial statement information to analyse the performance of firms over time and across industries, and demonstrate an understanding of the role and the importance of the auditor and corporate governance in ensuring the quality of financial statement information and user confidence in this information.

The module aims to introduce fundamental economic concepts to non-economists. It will familiarise you with conventional assumptions about the behaviour of individuals and firms, their interactions in markets and the role of government with respect to market failures of various kinds. It will alert you to some basic questions and doubts about the conventional assumptions.

This module will provide you with the theoretical foundations, appropriately supported by real-life examples, to help understand how global business works today.

You'll develop critical awareness of major issues and problems associated with the development of global business strategies, and understand major trends in globalisation and the factors influencing international investment by global firms. You will critically evaluate ideas about the internationalisation process together with an awareness of the problems of formulating and implementing sustainable global business strategies. Understand and apply concepts and skills relevant to the problems of managing global value chains sustainably and dealing with the challenges associated with adapting to the informal “rules of the game” in different host market

Businesses need to be agile in the face of this rapid social and economic change. This module examines how organisations can participate in sustainability transitions and profit from solving the world’s problems rather than contributing to them. Many firms and non-profits now have a chief sustainability officer supported by a sustainability department who look to coordinate this endeavour, so the module examines their role and the critical processes they need. However, becoming a successful sustainable organisation is everyone’s job. So this module also aims to equip all managers to participate in a successful transition to a sustainable business model.

The module aims to provide an introduction to quantitative methods to students from non-numerical backgrounds. The module will equip you with an understanding of descriptive/inferential statistics and data presentation and enable you to apply the major tools needed for MSc level study and for the use of data analysis in the workplace.

You will learn to: 

• Describe a data set in a way that highlights what is important, by drawing the client directly to relevant comparisons.
• Choose which statistical method is most appropriate for each kind of data, and each kind of research question.
• Conduct basic inferential statistical tests, such as t- tests and Chi-square tests
• Conduct and interpret a multiple regression analysis
• Conduct and interpret a logistic regression analysis
• Demonstrate the ability to think quantitatively about data and determine what data can tell us, and what it cannot.

This module will provide you with a foundation for, and a critical assessment of, theoretical and empirical approaches to strategy.

You will also understand the historical and academic roots of the field of strategy, and provide frameworks and models for the interrogation and development of strategy in a variety of industries, and illustrate links between Strategy and Performance.

This module will familiarise you with cutting-edge sustainability reporting.

The module will provide you with the skills necessary to read, assess, and engage in the preparation of sustainability reports. You'll discuss different ways of defining materiality for the purpose of sustainability reports, and practice materiality assessments as well as the use of relevant metrics in relation to material issues of sustainability reporting. There will be a particular emphasis on climate-related financial disclosure but equal attention given to non-financial materiality, for example, in relation to biodiversity and water.

You'll learn how to diagnose complex sustainability problems, generate and test new ideas, develop sustainable and social business models, and evaluate whether innovations genuinely create positive change.
