Future-proof: Core 17 is filled with research to help business leaders to embrace the digital future of work

The new edition of Core magazine is out now, offering current and aspiring business leaders a wealth of insights on how to harness AI and navigate digital transformation.

Around 40 per cent of jobs globally are already exposed to AI, according to the International Monetary Fund.

The opportunities for companies are enormous, but so are the risks.

As David Rodriguez, Senior Client Partner at global talent consultants Korn Ferry, warns in this issue: “Leaders need to understand the different tools that are available, how they work, where they add value, and where they pose risks.

“It’s similar to when personal computers emerged; it wasn’t enough to turn the machine on – you had to know how to use Word or Excel to be effective.”

A panel of academic experts from Warwick Business School explore five potential pitfalls of using AI and how to avoid those risks in the cover story.

Hila Lifshitz, Professor of Management and Director of the AI Innovation Network at WBS, warns that even highly-educated and highly-motivated staff can fall into the trap of over-automating their work using generative AI tools such as ChatGPT or Claude.

The real skill lies in understanding when to use AI to add value, how to collaborate with it to produce better results without sacrificing human creativity, how to avoid being misled when generative AI overwhelms you with information, and how to avoid algorithmic bias.

Core 17 features a range of research on AI, technology, and the future of work, including:

  • How generative AI could transform teamwork
  • Three steps to prevent digital transformation from failing
  • Why companies aren’t capturing the full value of connected products they create
  • How Douyin (China’s equivalent to TikTok) beat the odds to become a social media giant
  • Five lessons for job hunting in the age of AI.

How to succeed in a digital world

Andy Lockett, Dean of Warwick Business School and Professor of Strategy & Entrepreneurship, said: “It is increasingly clear that the future will favour those who recognise AI’s potential and understand how to deploy it effectively.

“At Warwick Business School, we are equipping business leaders with the knowledge to do that through our research and our portfolio of postgraduate and post-experience programmes.”

In addition to its world-class research, Warwick Business School is embedding AI as an important subject across its taught programmes.

The School's Global Online MBA is ranked third in the world and second in the UK. It offers candidates the option to specialise in Digital and AI.

Candidates on the Executive MBA and Part-time MBA (London Accelerator) can also chose to specialise in this way.

The AI Leadership programme is designed to equip senior leaders with the practical tools and strategic insight they need to drive AI-led transformation in their organisation. The two-day executive education course is delivered at WBS London at The Shard.

WBS also offers a range of Master’s programmes that allow students to develop their expertise in AI while building a broader range of skills required to succeed in a business environment.

These include the MSc Business with Digital Strategy and Artificial Intelligence, The MSc Business Analytics and Artificial Intelligence, and the MSc Financial Technology.

WBS academics are also developing a range of tools and simulations to provide students with new ways to experience and harness the power of AI.

This includes The Slingshot simulation developed by Professor Ammon Salter, which allows users to navigate the opportunities and risks involved in building an AI unicorn.
