Kira and Diala reflect on their first semester at WBS, sharing honest insights into academics, student life, and advice for future students.
My first MSc term at Warwick Business School
MSc Management of Information Systems & Digital Innovation student, Xiaotian Dai, reflects on her first term at WBS - exploring new ways of thinking, discovering innovation, and building a supportive community through learning, friendship and campus life.
Arriving in the UK alone - with my luggage in one hand and big expectations in the other - I wondered how my new life at WBS would unfold. I never imagined that within a few months, Warwick Business School would feel like a place where I could learn deeply, explore freely and build friendships that feel warm, supportive and genuine.
My first term studying MSc Management of Information Systems & Digital Innovation has been filled with growth, laughter and countless meaningful moments that have shaped both my academic journey and personal experience.
Choosing an MSc
The academic experience during my first term has transformed the way I understand organisations and technology. In our MIS module, we go far beyond definitions. We explore what systems really are, how ERP tools work within real companies, how organisations select technological artefacts and how employees adapt when new systems are introduced.
During discussions, I often find myself imagining the decision-making process behind choosing a system or the challenges employees might face when using unfamiliar technologies. These reflections are completely new to me and have helped me appreciate how closely technology is woven into organisational life.
This perspective shift has been one of the most enriching parts of my MSc so far - not just learning content but learning a new way to see the world.
Warwick Experience
A highlight of my first term has been discovering the Gillmore Centre for Financial Technology. Although their events are occasional, each one has left a strong impression. They bring together industry professionals from across the West Midlands and academics from around the world to discuss cutting-edge developments in AI and FinTech.
I also joined their hackathons, which were intense but incredibly rewarding. Collaborating with classmates from diverse backgrounds allowed me to apply what I had learned in a practical, creative and fast-paced setting. It made me appreciate the innovative spirit that WBS nurtures across all MSc courses.
Outside of academics, exploring the beautiful surroundings has become an important part of my routine. Sunny weekends often take us to Leamington Spa - peaceful, picturesque and a perfect escape from coursework. Visiting Kenilworth Castle was a surreal experience, and Warwick Castle during Halloween felt magical.
The easy access to the train station has also made it simple to discover cities like Birmingham, Manchester and London, adding even more colour to weekend life.
WBS campus life
The friendships I’ve built here have shaped my WBS experience in the most meaningful way. My classmates and I quickly became close - we study together, support each other and explore life outside the classroom.
One of my favourite memories happened during our Intercultural course. While sharing personal stories, someone suggested creating a birthday calendar for our class. We loved the idea. When we celebrated Lucia’s birthday in November, the room filled with laughter and joy. It was a moment that made me feel at home, even while being far from home.
Beyond academics, we swim together at the Sports Hub, join Rock Up Play sessions and try new activities as a group. These shared experiences have made me feel connected, grounded and supported.
Social events at WBS added even more colour to the term. The Mature Students Social allowed me to meet people with similar work experience and ambitions. And the Silent Disco - my first ever - was unforgettable.
Everyone danced with headphones, each tuning into their own music. From the outside, the room looked silent, but inside it was full of energy and laughter. Surreal, hilarious and truly memorable.
MSc journey at WBS
If future students are wondering what life at WBS feels like, I would say this: it is full of opportunity, warmth and discovery. Be open. Try new things. Embrace both the academic challenge and the everyday moments that make this experience special.
My first term at WBS has been a beautiful beginning - filled with new perspectives, new places and friendships that feel like a small family. I’m excited to see what the next term brings and how this journey continues to shape me.
