Achieving a Master's scholarship at Warwick Business School

We spoke with MSc Mathematical Finance student, Britney Toroitich, about her journey so far at WBS including the school’s diversity, course structure and career support and how her scholarship has enhanced her time.

I am currently pursuing an MSc in Mathematical Finance, and receiving a 50% tuition fee scholarship to study at Warwick Business School was a game-changer for me.

It wasn’t merely about financial support; it marked the beginning of an enriching academic and personal journey that has expanded my perspective, both professionally and culturally. I genuinely did not expect to get one, but receiving the scholarship played a huge role in my decision to join WBS.

One of the great advantages of the scholarship has been the ability to focus solely on my academic growth. The reduced financial pressure has allowed me to dive deeper into my studies and engage in individual projects that build vital job-related skills.

The learning environment at WBS is dynamic, with a combination of lectures, seminars, and group work that promote a comprehensive understanding of the material. The variety of learning methods has helped me internalise complex concepts thoughtfully, and the exposure to individual projects has been particularly helpful in building practical skills.

Diversity at WBS

One of the most memorable aspects of my time at WBS so far has been the diversity within my cohort. It is not just a melting pot of different academic backgrounds, but also a celebration of various cultural perspectives. This keeps me on my toes and encourages constant personal and professional growth.

I am surrounded by exceptionally smart, driven individuals who push me to do better every day. The collaborative and supportive nature of the cohort ensures that no one feels left behind. Everyone is willing to lend a hand or offer advice.

My flatmates have also taught me a great deal about different cultures. I have had the privilege of learning Mandarin from one of them, an experience I never expected when I first arrived. I have had cultural discussions on how different and similar some of our cuisines are.

It is actually mind-blowing how we have so many similarities across different cultures. These interactions have helped me broaden my worldview and have significantly enriched my time here.

From career coaching to networking events with industry experts, there are numerous opportunities to gain valuable insights and guidance. What’s impressive is that the resources are available to everyone, whether you're just starting to explore career paths or already have specific goals in mind.

The career services team is dedicated to helping each student, and I’ve been able to tap into these resources to gain clarity and make informed decisions about my professional future.

When I arrived, I was uncertain about which career path to take. However, meaningful talks with the career team helped me untangle my thoughts and gain clarity.

Social life at Warwick

The WBS experience isn’t just about the academic side, it’s about embracing the full scope of opportunities available to you. From exploring Cities to attending events and making lifelong connections, my time here has been filled with enriching engagements.

I recently visited a local Christmas market, explored the Manchester Museum, and enjoyed numerous activities provided by WBS such as pet therapy sessions. I even had a chance to dance in the snow. These moments have allowed me to not only build lifetime connections, but they have also helped strike a balance between academics and personal life.

Scholarship application tips

If you're considering applying for a WBS scholarship, here’s the one advice you need based on my experience: Apply early! Scholarships are awarded on an ongoing basis, applying early will give you a better chance, hence consider applying as early as possible.

For me, the scholarship has been more than just financial aid. It has been a gateway for me to focus more on my academics, personal growth, and figuring out my career prospects. I would highly encourage anyone considering joining WBS to apply.
