How a Warwick MSc shaped my career
Bolu is a WBS alumna with a Master’s in Management of Information Systems and Digital Innovation, now making an impact as a Learning and Operations Specialist at the British Red Cross. Her journey is a powerful example of how WBS equips students to turn curiosity into expertise, and academic insight into real-world impact.
My name is Boluwatife Buraimoh, but I go by Bolu. I’m a WBS alumna with a Master’s in Management of Information Systems and Digital Innovation. I'm a Christian, a hobby enthusiast, and someone who enjoys meaningful conversations. At my core, I’m driven by the desire to make life simpler and interesting—whether through my work, Sunday school teaching, my writing, or daily interactions.
Making an impact at the British Red Cross
I work as a Learning and Operations Specialist at the British Red Cross. It’s a role that blends purpose with practice, and it's incredibly rewarding. I’m part of the central learning team, where I manage the Learning Management System (LMS)—a core information system. My work involves quality assurance for digital content, troubleshooting access issues, managing communications, and collaborating with product teams. Essentially, I serve as the first point of contact for digital learning, ensuring that what we deliver is accessible, clear, and impactful for both volunteers and staff. Working for an organisation rooted in humanitarian values adds deeper meaning to the day-to-day.
How an MSc at WBS laid the foundation for career success
The MSc laid a strong foundation. In my first term we took the MIS module and the final assessment was to write on an information system of any organisation. I randomly chose to write on the LMS at my undergraduate university (I hadn’t really known much on learning systems at the time). That single assignment deepened my understanding of learning systems—conceptually and practically. The feedback pushed me to think beyond theory. Later, modules like Managing Digital Innovation (MDI) which covered topics on design thinking and innovation management equipped me with tools I now use to solve problems creatively at work. Above all, the course honed my critical thinking, which has been indispensable in a dynamic, systems-driven role.
Embracing diversity and flexibility through the course
The diversity of ideas, people, and academic paths. The structure wasn’t rigid; it allowed room to explore. I was drawn to creativity and had the freedom to tailor my electives accordingly, being able to take courses like Creating Digital Communities and Governance & Corporate Responsibility. WBS creates a space where no two journeys have to look the same, and that flexibility made my experience especially meaningful.
Reflecting on a transformative time at WBS
Challenging, transformative, and fulfilling. WBS pushed me to think more critically and express myself more confidently. It broadened my worldview and helped me connect with people from all over the world. Beyond the classroom, I made memories that I’ll always value. I had fun and made lasting friendships. It was a defining chapter in my life.
Advice for future WBS Master’s students
Be open-minded. Ask questions. Use the opportunity to explore both the known and the unfamiliar—you’ll be better for it. Speak with people, there is a wealth of knowledge at WBS, and it might just be a random conversation that opens the door to your career.
