Moving from India to UK for my MSc

24 June 2025

Current MSc Marketing & Strategy student, Nadia Samad, gives us an insight to her experiences with the MSc CareersPlus & Employer Relations team.

Sitting inside the WBS building at my go-to working spot, I found myself mulling over the past six months; which feels like it went in a blink of an eye (except the exam and submission week).  I remember arriving here with a ton of dreams and aspirations, mixed with enough anxiousness that my mind just wouldn’t stop.

I’ve always been the type of person who has never strayed too far from home bar a quick trip with friends here and there. When I decided to take the plunge into this new journey on a new continent, it was a major shift. While I made this decision, I had been swaying between “I’ve got this!” and “do UK jobs even exist?”

Yet, as I sit here now, I can confidently say that I’m a better version of myself than I was when I first started. This is a journey of navigating not just life, but what can be the labyrinth that is the WBS Careers Team.

Careers support at WBS

The induction session with the careers team was a revelation. Picture this: a room full of enthusiastic faces, each of us scanning QR codes and getting lost in a resource page that promised so much more than we could ever keep track of. It was like a crash course in opportunities. I got hooked on every little bit—from the one-to-one sessions that felt like they were made just for me, to the training sessions that offered advice you wouldn’t get from 2am friend chat online.

One moment that stands out was the careers fair. Attending an event where more than 40 companies were there to simply have a chat. By the end of the day, I had a stack of pamphlets, links to intriguing opportunities, free goodies (every university student’s dream) and about 20 new LinkedIn connections.

It wasn’t an overt internship or placement fair; it was just a space where companies and students could exchange ideas, a space that could terrify an introvert yet light up the day for an extrovert. It reminded me of those BuzzFeed quizzes we’d take, only now, it was all about the initiative and discovering possibilities rather than just finding out which type of profession suits me the best.

The variety of resources available is staggering. From the welcome section that gently eases you in, to modules like ‘Deciding What to Do’, ‘Applications’, ‘Interviews’ and ‘Assessment Centres’, and even sections like ‘International Careers’, there’s something for every stage of your professional journey.

Building my CV at university

For someone like me, who’s tried navigating multiple fields (or at least felt like I was switching fields every day), the personalised one-to-one consultations were a breath of fresh air. These sessions weren’t about giving me generic advice; they were about mapping the gap between my past in India and the future I’m building here in the UK.

In every session, every piece of feedback, I learned something new about my skillset. I began to see that every challenge, old and new, was a stepping stone.

Looking back, it’s incredible to see how embracing the unknown and using every resource available has shaped this journey. If you’re an international student or someone who’s ever felt a bit lost when facing new opportunities, my advice is simple: jump in with both feet.

Use the resources, ask questions, and let your unique story shine through. The WBS Careers Team isn’t just about job applications or CV reviews; it’s about empowering you to bridge the gap between who you are and who you want to become.
