Data driven: Business analytics gave rise to the Tesco clubcard, pioneered by Clive Humby

The phrase “data is the new oil” has been swirling around the internet for 20 years. 

It is believed to have been first uttered by Clive Humby, the mathematician behind Tesco’s Clubcard, a pioneering loyalty programme that has enabled the supermarket giant to dominate the UK food retail industry. 

The Chief Data Officer applied science and technology to the mountain of data the Clubcard produced to understand customer behaviour and steal a march on competitors.  

As the internet has taken over our lives, it is an approach copied and tailored by companies across the world, with organisations desperate to turn their data ‘pools’ into data ‘rivers’ or even ‘oceans’. 

It has seen MSc Business Analytics courses rise in popularity as students learn the tools and techniques to apply data analytics to real world problems.  

Higher education analyst QS ranks the best MSc Business Analytics courses in the world, with WBS, whose course has been revamped to include the latest trends in AI and renamed MSc Business Analytics & Artificial Intelligence, ranked 13th.. 

QS takes data from its annual global survey of thousands of employers and academics alongside analysis of research impact, diversity, alumni impact and return on investment to assess courses. 

It aims to highlight programmes that have links to industry, strong career returns, and excellent value for money. 

Understanding MSc Business Analytics rankings 

Rankings are a good place to start when assessing which business school to attend, though looking at the strengths of the school and content of the course is just as important. 

MSc Business Analytics Course Director Michael Mortenson, Reader of Information Systems Management and Analytics, believes students also need to research the careers support they will receive. 

“In a field like business analytics, especially as it evolves into a more AI‑infused space, there is an increasing need for technical rigour, as well as strong standards and ethics,” says Dr Mortenson. “Rankings therefore serve as an important measure to hold the programme up against, helping ensure that it continues to deliver at the level expected.  

“At the same time, rankings are also a reflection of the quality of the student experience, so they provide insight into how well the programme is creating a positive experience for students and delivering a curriculum they want to engage with. 

“But students need to read around the rankings and find out if the business school suits their objectives. If gaining a job straight after completion is the goal, then investigating how big and what sort of careers services are on offer is just as important.” 

Criteria for ranking MSc Business Analytics programmes 

A high-quality MSc Business Analytics programme demands academic excellence, and Dr Mortenson argues it is embedded into every process at WBS. 

Academics are helped by a host of edtech innovations and their own teaching and learning consultant with workshops helping them take advantage of the tools on offer. 

Dr Mortenson says: “This is shaped by the constant tension between keeping pace with a rapidly changing field and maintaining academic rigour.  

“In a world where AI tools and platforms evolve on an almost daily basis, the challenge is to move fast and keep track of the changes while doing so with a stable base of policy checks, rigour and deliverables.”  

Industry connections are fundamental at WBS, a School with a long history of partnership with business since its inception in 1967. And this is highlighted on a course like MSc Business Analytics & Artificial Intelligence. 

“Business analytics really only exists as an applied science,” says Dr Mortenson. “Having ranking criteria around industry links reflect something essential: analytics must be grounded in real-world use.  

“At WBS, this is delivered through external speakers, case studies, research partners and consultancy businesses, alongside collaborations with organisations such as Nationwide Building Society and bank HSBC.” 

Initiatives like hackathons, where students tackle real-world problems, and the capstone Business in Practice project, which students can replace the traditional end of Master’s dissertation with, further embeds industry engagement.  

Students can apply what they have learned directly in internships, dissertations, or the analytics portfolio pathway, ensuring that everything is shaped by industry needs. 

When it comes to alumni success, WBS graduates have gone into roles at the likes of JPMorgan, KPMG, Tata Consultancy Services, Accenture, Cathay Pacific, and Virgin Media. 

The MSc Employment Report Graduating Class of 2025 report reveals there were 28 nationalities on the MSc Business Analytics course at WBS, with an average age of 24, and the average salary after graduating being $71,541 when adjusted for purchasing power parity (PPP). 

“Our excellent careers services team mean WBS has consistently had strong performance in graduate employment and salaries,” says Dr Mortenson, who is also part of the School’s Gillmore Centre for Financial Technology. “The ability for students to achieve their goals and find suitable work afterwards is really what the whole year is about.  

“In a world where every business is a tech business and data is constantly being generated, skilled analytics professionals are in high demand.” 

Business analytics vs data science 

The distinction between business analytics and data science is something that has evolved through various hype cycles.  

“Roles have shifted over time from business analyst/data analyst to business analytics specialist, then to data scientist, and now increasingly towards AI-focused titles,” says Dr Mortenson. “For me, the names change, but the core activity remains the same. 

“I personally would reject the distinction between business analytics and data science in terms of what matters in organisations, particularly in the face of generative AI. 

“In reality, we're all in the business of taking the raw material of data, scientifically working through it within the business context and creating some business insight.” 

While there may once have been a clearer split - where business analytics focused more on organisational context and data science on coding - this gap has narrowed. With modern tools, the emergence of AI agents and ‘vibe coding’, any distinction is being further eroded. 

“Both fields are converging, with increasing importance placed on linking technical work to real business value and outcomes,” says Dr Mortenson. 

The new design of the MSc Business Analytics & Artificial Intelligence far better reflects the ‘broad church’ nature of the modern world of analytics, data science, and AI. Two decades ago, the ideal employee would know enough in each subject to be a good all-rounder, but today employers want specialists on top of the base level of skills. 

“Our new curricula seeks to adapt to that shift by offering different specialist pathways,” says Dr Mortenson. “These four pathways are AI, predictive and prescriptive analytics, management analytics, and marketing analytics and technology.” 

Students opting for the AI specialisation will focus on understanding the technologies and techniques that power it, with more hands-on exposure as to how they are built and adapted for business. They also learn how to orchestrate these complex systems to create value. 

In predictive and prescriptive analytics, the focus is on underlying, highly technical tools, including advanced statistical, mathematical and AI methods. 

Management analytics combines learning a foundation in analytics with applications across finance, supply chains, and strategy. 

Marketing analytics and technology delves into the digital and marketing environments, alongside the technologies that underpin them, which increasingly overlap. 

Future trends in business analytics education 

With AI developing at rapid speed education is also changing to keep up with its impact on business.  

“There is a view that this is fundamentally changing what we teach and how we teach it,” says Dr Mortenson. “However, I would argue that even in the face of significant change, the core skills remain the same. 

“The analogy I often like to use is to think of AI-augmented jobs, much like we think about the flying of a plane. 

“Pilots work hand-in-hand with an AI of sorts in terms of the plane's autopilot. AI-augmented work will be like flying a plane, where most of the journey is on autopilot. Importantly, pilots are still required, and their role gives insight into this future world. 

“First is take-off, providing the right inputs to the AI, including data, prompts, guardrails, and problem definition, which is critical to success.  

“Second is keeping the plane in the air, so stepping in when needed, critically evaluating outputs, and understanding how models work in order to adjust course. Finally, you must land the plane, and that is translating outputs into business value and managing change.” 

AI may be changing the workplace and education, but the core skills of analysing and critically appraising outputs will still be needed to make sure today’s glut of data remains as valuable as oil.
