Green thinkers: Climate change needs tackling and adapting to. The new MSc Business with Sustainability will teach students how to do that

Master’s students will be able to equip themselves with the skills to embed sustainability, ESG principles and responsible leadership on the new MSc Business with Sustainability.

As organisations grapple with climate risk and growing pressure from investors, customers and employees to deliver on environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues, managers who can build a business for a sustainable future are in demand.

Students will be able to learn how to design a sustainability strategy, measure their organisation’s environmental and social impact and understand what sustainable growth looks like on the new course, which is now open for applications.

Joshua Fullard, Associate Professor and Course Director, said: “We are becoming familiar with the issues climate change will bring to businesses and the sustainability challenges facing organisations.

“Future business leaders will need to lead their organisation through sustainable business transformation, so they can adapt to the changing environment and weather systems that will affect supply chains, critical operations and their staff.

“They will need to balance commercial success with environmental and societal responsibilities. The MSc Business with Sustainability course will teach students how to do just that.

“It will combine core business disciplines such as accounting, economics and strategy with a dedicated focus on sustainability. Students will explore issues ranging from climate change and the transition to a low-carbon economy to corporate responsibility and social impact.”

With the University of Warwick among the top five universities targeted by the largest number of top employers in 2026, according to research firm High Fliers, WBS Master’s students have graduated to work at the likes of Amazon, investors BlackRock, fashion house LVMH and car firm Jaguar Land Rover.

At WBS, Master’s students have their own dedicated careers service – the MSc CareersPlus & Employer Relations team. Even before students set foot on campus the support begins with the MSc Summer School, a series of online workshops and webinars.

Alongside a host of online resources and video guides, students have access to one-to-one coaching, interview training, and sector specific careers events with multinational companies like consultants Bain & Company, bank Goldman Sachs, tech giant Google and drinks brand Red Bull.

Dr Fullard added: “Employers today aren’t just looking for graduates with academic credentials; they’re seeking individuals who can think strategically, lead with purpose, and adapt with agility.

“That’s why employability is woven into our curriculum, ensuring students graduate not only with the knowledge of how to do business, but with the confidence and capability to apply it in the real world.

“This course has been created after talking to leading companies and in response to a clear shift in the expectations placed on modern organisations.

"Business leaders are expected to understand environmental and social risks, navigate increasingly complex stakeholder expectations, and create long-term value. Employers are looking for graduates who can bring rigorous business knowledge together with an understanding of sustainability challenges."

Develop expertise in sustainability, innovation and leadership

Students will study eight core modules, ranging from the Foundations of Financial & Management Accounting, and the Fundamentals of Economic Behaviour, to Leading Sustainable Business, and Sustainable Innovation and Impact.

They will also pick one optional module with a vast array to choose from, including Artificial Intelligence in Business, Entrepreneurial Mindset, and Digital Marketing Technology and Management.

And students can choose to do a traditional final dissertation or the innovative Business in Practice, where they compete in teams in a business simulation, or even opt for a self-sourced internship.

"The future belongs to organisations that can innovate responsibly," said Dr Fullard.  “Sustainability is no longer a specialist concern. It is becoming a core leadership capability, and this course is designed to equip the next generation of leaders to shape what comes next.

“As a school for Change Makers, we want them to leave confident in their ability to drive meaningful change wherever their careers take them.”
