(Allegation of sexual assault. Statement on guilty WBS male student)
In November a female WBS student reported a very serious incident that was alleged to have occurred at an off-campus student residence.
We were very distressed to hear of this incident and deeply concerned for the female student involved.
That student was immediately given help, support and guidance by the University’s Wellbeing Support Services, with the male student involved moved to alternative accommodation. Our team at WBS, including the student’s Personal Tutor and the Programme Team, also gave advice and support.
Following that initial support and guidance the female student then made a formal complaint.
An investigation was launched and a precautionary suspension was issued against a male WBS student while it took place.
The investigation, and subsequent disciplinary proceedings, has now concluded with the decision taken to suspend a male WBS student for a year.
This is a deeply saddening incident. The University’s Warwick Community Respect Programme is designed to help students understand what is expected of them as a member of the Warwick community.
It supports our Dignity at Warwick Policy which tackles harassment and bullying by emphasising positive behaviour and the responsibilities that we all have to challenge inappropriate behaviour when we see it.
An independent review of our processes is currently taking place to ensure that we can meet our community’s expectations on support and wellbeing with similar cases in the future. We are also undertaking a community review of our values.
We recognise that in our increasingly complex world, our processes continually need to adapt to ensure they support our community and its wellbeing.

(Statement on guilty WBS male student and other male student involved if needed)

An investigation was launched and a precautionary suspension was issued against two male WBS students while it took place.
The investigation found disciplinary proceedings should only be taken against one of the male students as it was determined the second male student had no case to answer.
Those proceedings have now concluded with the decision taken to suspend a male WBS student for a year.
