My first term as an MSc student: Exciting, colourful, and challenging

25 November 2021

MSc Management student Wenlan gives an insight into her first term at Warwick Business School; from settling into campus life, to a new learning experience with the 1+1+1 method.

My name is Wenlan, a postgraduate student of MSc Management at Warwick Business School. It’s my pleasure to be a member of the WBS family and share my experience with you.

Arriving on campus

My first term was exciting, colourful, and challenging. I felt a strong connection with the School from the first day of Welcome Week -- volunteers in yellow jackets warmly guided students to the campus, the Wellbeing Team was friendly and helped any students in need, police and security shared safety knowledge (even handing out bike locks to protect your property), and, most importantly, hundreds of societies showed the diverse culture of the student community. Many exciting activities on campus enriched my cross-culture experience, one of which was the Navratri Dandiya event held by the global communication community. I deepened my understanding of Indian culture and got to know more people on campus.

Teaching and the course

I was impressed by the teaching method here, which is different to my previous experience. In term 1, WBS developed the “1+1+1” idea for teaching, combining online lectures and offline seminars, which not only secured our health safety during the pandemic, but also gave us opportunities to exchange knowledge through face-to-face discussion. Lecturers and faculty at WBS are professional and supportive, providing me with a critical vision to analyse real-world cases, being patient with questions and giving us detailed assistance with our assignments. During class, I enjoyed the business simulation, where we covered the product, supply chain, marketing and selling of an integrated business process, giving me a valuable chance to think about the big picture. The class representative system gave us a great pathway to express suggestions to course leaders by a democratically elected representative.

Accessing CareersPlus

The CareersPlus team is terrific, giving me many opportunities to understand the career environment and meet companies. Careers coaching was offered throughout the whole term, including lecture sessions, industry festivals and face-to-face tutorship. I would admit that the quality of my CV improved a lot after the careers introduction and online tools provided by the career team.

Living off campus

I live off-campus near the School, in a quiet area with convenient access to both the shopping centre and School. It is a cosy place for me to escape from the concrete jungle with joyful gardens and cute little animals. Public transportation is also in easy reach nearby - buses and trains extend in all directions, which makes it easy to explore the beauty of the UK every weekend.

It was a marvellous life for me in term 1, and as it comes close to the following term, I anticipate the face-to-face teaching experience, where I’ll be able to communicate with lecturers frequently and get to know more friends. Furthermore, I am looking forward to the elective module in term two, which contains my interest in technology. I can’t wait for the next term!
