MSc Taster Lecture: The Many Roles of “Risk” in Finance

Join us for a taster lecture by Professor Alex Stremme, Associate Dean of our Finance MSc programmes.

Alex will present on 'The Many Roles of "Risk" in Finance':

Without risk, no return, the saying goes. Nowhere is this more obvious than in the world of financial markets. Risk is a "necessary evil": most of us would rather avoid it if possible, but without risk, there would be no economic activity, no growth, no innovation. Much of Finance, therefore, is about allocating the "scarce resource" risk as efficiently as possible.

Drawing on a number of core and elective modules from our Finance MSc syllabus, we explore the many different roles that risk plays, the many ways of measuring and managing risk, and the mechanics of the "market" for risk. A profound understanding of the complex relationship between risk, return and value is essential for making optimal investment decisions. Our suite of Finance MSc courses explores this relationship from all its different angles and in many different contexts and develops the tools to make it work in our favour in business and finance.

This taster lecture is suitable for those interested in applying to our Finance MSc courses.
