Entrepreneurial Finance: Impact Investing and Grant-Making

Overview:
There has been much demand for knowledge sharing within the world of impact investing and grant-making. What does successful impact investing look like and what important lessons can we learn from those already working in this area?

We will address this topic and examine these questions collectively through an expert panel and audience Q and A session.

Speaker Biographies:

Alberto Lidji
Alberto Lidji is the former Global CEO of the Novak Djokovic Foundation. He is the founder and host of The Do One Better! Podcast –a weekly show inspiring listeners to be more philanthropic, to act more sustainably and to embrace social entrepreneurship. Alberto has unique insight into the world of impact investing and grantmaking, and has interviewed the CEOs and Chairs of leading organisations, including the LEGO Foundation, UBS Optimus Foundation, Aga Khan Foundation, EY Foundation, Dubai Cares and Buffett Early Childhood Fund. Alberto was invited to ring the NASDAQ Opening Bell in 2017; he has contributed thought pieces to the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU Perspectives); and has delivered lectures at Warwick Business School, the London School of Economics, SDA Bocconi School of Management and the OECD. He holds degrees from Cambridge University and the London School of Economics and is based in London, UK.

Nick Temple

Nick Temple - Nick joined Social Investment Business (SIB) in January 2018. SIB helps charities and social enterprises get the money and support they need to improve people’s lives. Since 2002, SIB has provided over £400m worth of loans and grants to charities and social enterprises, and enabled 2000+ organisations to become more resilient through business support programmes. Previously, Nick was Deputy CEO at Social Enterprise UK, where he helped treble membership numbers, develop the Buy Social Corporate Challenge, and oversaw its research function, including the State of Social Enterprise report. Before that, he was Director of Policy & Communications at the School for Social Entrepreneurs, and led the expansion of their social franchise across the country. A long time before all of that, he graduated from Warwick University.

Nick is on the board of Social Value UK, the Impact Investing Institute and Social Tech Trust, and also sits on Big Issue Invest’s Outcomes Investment Committee, Big Society Capital’s Advisory Group, Charity Bank’s Social Sector Advisory Panel and the Diversity Forum for Social Investment.

Erika Wiese

Erika Wiese is Head of Portfolio Management at Innovation Edge. Her role involves managing the overall portfolio pipeline; identifying and sourcing investment opportunities, managing deal flow to match impact targets and providing incubation and acceleration support to enable growth and scale. In order to grow the platform and ensure sufficient funding flow as investee’s transition to scale, she works with a range of investors and funders in the impact and venture philanthropy spaces to identify opportunities for collaboration.

Prior to joining Innovation Edge, Erika was part of a startup that built a digital platform to connect promising graduates to career opportunities. Erika has more than 10 years of experience working in the management consulting industry across multiple sectors. Based in Amsterdam, she worked for one of the largest Dutch banks, managing a global compliance risk assessment roll-out across several countries. 

Erika was also one of the lead trainers in the PWC European Training Academy, training PwC recruits within Europe on strategy, change management, process improvement and consulting skills.

She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics and a Psychology Honours from the University of Stellenbosch, a Masters in Financial Management from Nyenrode University in the Netherlands and an Executive Coaching Diploma from the University of Cape Town.
