Developing a continuous improvement culture for transformation

Interested in improving processes and performance? Maybe you’ve experienced the use of popular tools like Lean or Six Sigma, PDCA improvement cycles and value stream mapping? Many of these tools and approaches are useful and can transform the way we work, but very often we fail to diffuse these methods across a whole system, leaving pockets of practice but no real change in behavior or performance.

This seminar draws upon a three-year study of five English hospitals, each in pursuit of cultural transformation via the implementation of a lean based management system. These five hospitals each worked in partnership with the same external consultant, to develop the same infrastructure, routines and practices, and the same (comparable) resource investment, yet we observed very different outcomes. Our analysis highlights the socio-technical nature of improving processes and performance.
