Tell us a bit about yourself and what course you are studying.
I’m a second-year student studying BSc Management with Marketing here at WBS. In my free time, I like to practice my photography skills by taking pics of my friends, whether it be on my phone when making TikToks, or with my film camera. I always find myself using social media and jotting down ideas for new content, not only because it is a key part of my job as a marketing ambassador and student influencer for WBS, but it helps me wind down after a long day. I would describe myself as creative; WBS has allowed me to express myself through my content!
What attracted you to WBS? Why did you choose to study here?
One of the main reasons I chose WBS was their exemplary academic practices, modules, and staff. The module leaders made their content interesting and engaging! I also saw how WBS achieved an Athena Gold for their EDI work, which appealed to me as a member of a minority group myself.
What is the best thing about your degree?
The best part of my degree is the module catalogue that WBS offers. For my marketing pathway, there are a variety of modules that cover unique and useful aspects of the field, from AI and Martech to Luxury Business Leadership. This diverse range not only interests me but prepares me for the ever-changing world of work once I graduate.
How have you found having a personal tutor, have they helped you throughout your studies?
My tutor was extremely helpful in many ways. When I started they introduced me to the basic aspects of being a WBS student (e.g. how modules are structured and how to transition from 6th form to university) and made me feel less anxious about starting university. They were always approachable and would offer help whenever and wherever they could, I never felt like a burden on them, which made it easier to approach them with my concerns and questions. My tutor specialised in marketing, and I was able to ask them for tips on how to advance myself. My tutor was the wind in my wings that lifted me and inspired me to continue down the marketing pathway.
What sort of support have you received from the careers team?
The careers team always sourced useful software and information that I used to tailor and review my CV, making sure it complied with industry standards. Additionally, they provided a dedicated career opportunity tab, where I could find relevant work experience and upskilling events!
Have you taken part in any projects, internships or work experience so far while being a student at WBS?
During my time at WBS, I became a student influencer for the Student Engagement and Experience team, alongside a Marketing Ambassador. My learning in the marketing modules supported me with these roles, ensuring that the content created was engaging and unique. Furthermore, many of the modules at WBS cover diversity and inclusion. Empathy is an important part of these roles, as understanding how people interpret and interact with content differently based on their background, allowed me to tailor my content for the people who would be viewing it.
I also participated in the Mapletree Market Research challenge to find insights into student satisfaction with their accommodations. My marketing and data analysis modules equipped me with the skill set to effectively design a survey to collect accurate data and translate it into presentations and data visualisations.
What do you aim to do once you graduate?
Once I graduate, I aim to enter the field of influencer/social media/digital marketing. Using the skills and work experience I’ve gained at WBS, I hope to land a role where I can continue to develop my content creation and creativity skills, as well as harness my market research and analysis skills to find new social media trends to utilise in future projects.
Do you feel that your degree is preparing you for your next steps?
My degree has given me several essential skills. Firstly, the breadth and depth of the module catalogue allowed me to tailor my degree to what I enjoyed, and let me learn a wide array of content relevant to marketing. Secondly, the group work introduced in some of the modules gave me a taste of working in groups, allowing me to understand how to work with others and create something amazing in the most efficient way possible. I felt like it was a true reflection of working in the real world. I have also developed my time management skills, as I learned how to prioritise and effectively complete tasks, which is important in any role.
What top tip would you give to prospective undergraduate students who are deciding if WBS is the right place for them?
I would tell a prospective student to ask themselves if they’d like to settle or not. WBS is made for those who want more from life. If you’re the type of person who strives to learn more and immerse yourself in an excellent academic environment to achieve more than “just enough” and truly want to master something during your time at university, then WBS is for you.
What top tip would you give to a student who is about to start at WBS?
I would tell them to start developing their academic writing and reading skills. I know how frustrating and confusing it can be to navigate the change to university-level academic practice. However, just undertaking the WBS writing booster modules and consulting all the relevant resources can set you up to excel even in your earliest pieces of work and essays. I would also recommend coming with an open mind and positive attitude. WBS always encourages students to interact with and learn from each other. This would be the time to break out of your comfort zone and try networking as you join WBS, as you never know where it could lead you, there’s no harm in trying.
