How can we make the most out of the CareersPlus team before we begin our MSc course?
Before you arrive at Warwick Business School, you can really try to lay a solid foundation for your career search by doing a few things:
- Think about yourself. This can include your strengths, interests, professional experiences, extra-curricular activities and anything you’ve previously enjoyed doing.
- Research different industries, companies and job roles.
- Network and chat with WBS alumni who are currently doing the kind of jobs you’re interested in.
If you compile this together and build a list of companies you’d like to speak with, you can then bring this to an appointment with a Careers Coach and we can help you reach out to those people.
What work opportunities are available to MSc students?
Masters students can undertake a few different kinds of work experience. It’s important to check when your term dates are before starting your course as this could influence which opportunities you can apply for.
Most likely you will be applying for graduate roles, and any internships that don’t conflict with your course, this will be an off-cycle internship which takes place outside the summer time.
Camilla Rasmussen, MSc Careers Coach.
How often do the Careers Team host events?
The Master’s team, as well as the wider CareersPlus team, organise events and workshops on a weekly basis. You can find them listed on my.wbs and book on to them through my.advantage.
How will the CareersPlus team support us throughout our course?
Alongside helping you search for job opportunities, we help with every stage of your transition from WBS into the workforce. This includes CV and application checking and help with mock interviews. As a coaching team we also do multiple regular workshops such as assessment centre prep and interview techniques.
Basically any question or concern you may have, please feel free to book into one of our coaching sessions and we can help you with that.

How does the CareersPlus team help you find a job?
There are a ton of ways that the CareersPlus team can help you find a job. These are my top 3 ways:
- A careers planning session. If you are not sure what you want to do professionally, book a session in with us and by the end of it you’ll have a much clearer picture of what you could go on to do.
- If you’ve seen a job you like the look of, we can help you perfect your CV, cover letter and any application forms.
- If you have an interview coming up, we can get you interview ready by doing a mock interview to help you increase your chances of success.
When should you start applying for jobs?
As soon as you start in Term 1! A lot of industries, such as banking, finance and consulting, will recruit from September onwards, so it’s best to have a recruitment plan ready. We can help with a huge range of pre-arrival support so we can get you off to the best possible start.

Tips and tricks for an efficient job search
An efficient job search, like many things, starts with good preparation and planning, such as regularly updating your CV and ensuring you tailor your CV to the sector and job role that you are applying for.
It’s also important to start to cultivate your own professional network and connections, such as leveraging our extensive WBS alumni communities, which will help lead to a more efficient job search.
When is the deadline to apply for a graduate job?
In the UK, most top employers begin their graduate job application process a year before the jobs start date. A key time in the application process is therefore the summer before you start your master’s degree, as September to January is a crucial application time, particularly for large companies and competitive industries.
Application deadline-wise, many employers set their deadlines in November and December. In some sectors such as investment banking, deadlines are fixed. However some employers do not set deadlines and keep the graduate programme open all year, however it’s worthwhile to get your application in as early if you can.
All of our MSc students can get access to our bespoke CareersPlus support, including one-to-one sessions, workshops, CV advice, and much more.
