Finding the right society for you
Here at the University of Warwick, there are over 250 unique and exciting societies available for students to join. When living as a university student, societies are a great way to meet new people and find time to incorporate hobbies into your schedule. Joining societies can enhance your university experience through networking, skill development and fun social events! Here are some tips to find which society is best suited to you.
What are your interests and goals?
The first step to finding the right society for you is to reflect on your passions, hobbies and skills. It may be that you are looking for new adventures or maintaining your hobbies and interests. At the beginning of each academic year the university holds a societies fair where students can explore the numerous options available, but if you didn’t manage to do this don’t worry as the Warwick SU has an online page where you can find important information! In my case, at the beginning of my time at Warwick I had discovered K-Pop and was searching for people who enjoyed the same music and culture; this was the start point for me when looking for a society!
Research the societies
The next step to finding the right society is to be proactive. Talking to current members of the society will give you an insight into whether you would enjoy and thrive in that environment. Whilst interacting with current society members, you can ask about their personal experiences with the society and gain an insider perspective into what types of activities are running throughout the year. Of course, we can’t forget the importance of social media! Following societies’ social media accounts will keep you in the loop with activities and schedules whilst allowing you to see their vibe. I found Warwick K-Pop society through social media and attended their quiz night during welcome week. If not for researching online, I may not have found the great community I now surround myself with.
What do you want to gain?
Joining the right society relies heavily on knowing what you seek from it. Are you looking to gain social connections, leadership experience or looking for a creative outlet? Answering these questions will tend to help you find the societies you are drawn to before having to commit. It is good to keep in mind that societies are like communities, and finding the right one will likely be through shared values that align with yourself. Being in my fourth year at University of Warwick, WKPS has gifted me with amazing friends who are open-minded and supportive, and increased my confidence through social connections!
Time Commitment and budget
Be sure to evaluate how much time you can dedicate to the society of your choice. A lot of societies have differing levels of commitment. For instance, a sports society is highly demanding for students due to training and competitions, so be realistic as to whether you can fit it into your academic schedule. Alongside the dedication of your time, you will need to consider how much you are willing to spend. Membership fees are the main cost here, however, some societies also have paid events. It is always best to check if fees are affordable for you and what they include to have an idea as to whether it is right for you. However, many societies will have free events, creating an inclusive environment, so try not to worry too much – you are bound to find a good fit with some research!
Don’t be afraid to try something new
University is about trying new things and keeping an open mind. This is the best time to step out of your comfort zone and explore the endless opportunities available to you at the University of Warwick. It is okay if there are bumps in the road - this is a journey so don’t be scared to switch when you feel a society is not working for you. Explore what is out there and remember to enjoy the process of finding communities as university becomes a home away from home. Although it was daunting when I initially took part in events, being a part of WKPS has enriched my university experience and I wouldn’t have come this far without this amazing society, so take the leap and you’ll reap the rewards.
