Prioritising health and wellbeing at university

10 May 2024

MSc Business Analytics student Ghazi kindly sat down with us to take us through how he keeps on top of his studies while maintaining a healthy body and mind.

Embarking on an MSc degree journey is akin to stepping into a whirlwind of knowledge, challenges, and personal growth. My experience at WBS has been nothing short of incredible.

It's been a journey marked by immense learning, particularly in the realms of Machine Learning, Database Management, and the fascinating world of novel technologies like GPTs and AI.

While it has been undeniably challenging, the excitement of exploring new frontiers and acquiring invaluable knowledge has made every step of the way worthwhile.

Among the plethora of enriching experiences, delving into the latest trends in analytics, especially AI, stands out as my favorite part. The ever-evolving landscape of artificial intelligence never fails to intrigue me, offering endless opportunities for innovation and discovery.

Managing my health and wellbeing at university

Maintaining mental health amidst the demands of rigorous studies is paramount. For me, regular breaks and engaging in activities that relax me, such as swimming laps in the pool, serve as effective stress-relievers. Keeping an active lifestyle not only clears my head, but also rejuvenates my body and soul.

Balancing wellbeing and academic pursuits are a delicate act, requiring careful attention and mindfulness. My advice to new students embarking on this journey is simple yet profound: prioritise your health and mental wellbeing above all else.

A healthy mind and body lay the foundation for optimal learning and performance. Take time to self-reflect, nurture friendships, and engage in activities that bring joy and fulfillment.

Academically, it's important to start early with your coursework and maintain a proactive approach to your studies. Pay attention in class, actively participate in discussions, and don't leave assignments and readings to the last minute.

By staying ahead of your schedule, you not only ensure the quality of your work but also alleviate the stress of impending deadlines.

Planning ahead is key. Set realistic goals and create a study schedule that allows for regular breaks and leisure activities. Even on your low-energy days, strive to make progress, no matter how small.

Whether it's revising a single lecture slide or reading a few pages of a textbook, every step forward counts towards your academic journey. Remember, successful time management and academic diligence go hand in hand with maintaining your overall wellbeing.

Finding time for myself away from studies

Away from the rigors of academia, I find solace in activities that rejuvenate my mind and spirit. Whether it's embarking on road trips with friends or simply strolling through the picturesque campus, these moments of leisure provide a much-needed break from the academic hustle and bustle.

Beyond the classroom, destressing involves hobbies and physical activities. While I enjoy unwinding with a good show, I've also learned to set limits on screen time to strike a balance between technology and relaxation. Swimming and walks with friends serve as refreshing outlets for unwinding after long days of study.

Managing wellbeing is a continuous journey, one that requires diligence and self-awareness. Making meaningful connections, indulging in activities that bring joy, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle are crucial aspects of managing wellbeing. A happy and healthy you is the foundation for success both academically and personally.

As you embark on your WBS Masters journey, may you find a harmonious balance between academic pursuits and personal wellbeing. Embrace the challenges, cherish the moments of growth, and above all, prioritize your health and happiness.

Here's to a fulfilling and enriching experience at WBS!
