Jake’s Journey: Completing the Foundation Year and gaining a Graduate Scheme at Deloitte
10 July 2019
With our first cohort of Foundation Year students graduating this summer, we caught up with Jake Howard to reflect on his time at WBS and discuss his next steps.
I have just finished studying BSc Management with Foundation Year at Warwick Business School, this means that after successfully completing the Foundation Year, I progressed onto the BSc Management course. The Foundation Year was a great middle step in transitioning from school to university, as I was able to learn vital skills that I didn’t acquire at school, as well as understanding how to complete coursework to a much higher standard. I feel that the Foundation Year was a progressive step in my educational journey, where I was able to prepare for degree level study without any pressure, and enjoy the experience of university life at the same time.
As I hadn’t studied A Level maths at school, studying business, mathematics and statistics was probably the most challenging part of my Foundation Year. However the numerical skills I learnt during my Foundation Year have been pivotal throughout my degree and I wouldn’t have been able to progress to the next level of study without these skills. Throughout my time at WBS I particularly enjoyed the foundations of business module that I studied in my Foundation Year as it gave me the opportunity to construct a full business plan which I think will be will extremely beneficial in my future career. I also found that the CORE modules were really helpful in preparing me for undergraduate study.
The support available at WBS has been invaluable, and in particular my personal tutor who was always willing to help me with any questions I had, along with the Undergraduate Programme team. The WBS Careersplus team are also a great resource available to all students, they have really helped me discover and plan my future career path. After I graduate I am really pleased to be joining the Deloitte Graduate Scheme in the Real Estate department based in London, which will involve consulting and advising on projects across the UK.
I would advise all future Foundation Year students to make the most of the great opportunity you have been given, as without this opportunity my life would be very different. I have developed many skills both through my studies and extra-curricular activities. I would encourage all future students join a club or society as it is a great way to meet new people and develop key skills for your future career. Throughout my time at WBS I have been a member of the Warwick Rugby team where I have developed my communication and leadership skills. Overall, the best thing about my university experience has been the people I have met, WBS has a strong community where staff are very approachable and engaging, and students are sociable and extremely driven.
