Platform Strategy

How are digital platforms shaping the world we live in and what does that mean for your organisation? 

Wherever you are working within an organisation or looking to start your own business, it is likely that your role will require knowledge about digital platforms. There is a growing interest in platforms and their strategic implications for organisations and society, and how they are shaping the world we live in. 

This Postgraduate Award will provide you with a broad perspective on platform strategy and highlight its relevance for contemporary organisations. You will explore how to build and design effective platforms, adaption strategies, and pricing strategies and understand platform competition and regulation. This course will also consider the implications of working with platforms and highlight how you can better understand how to participate and work with various platforms in your role. 

Through the course, you will use case studies to analyse examples of successful and failed platforms and apply concepts and theories to your organisation.

This Postgraduate Award will run across four days of face-to-face teaching at our London base in The Shard, with a six week window to complete your assignments.

Structure

  • Day one: You will explore the definitions of platform strategy and develop an understanding of what makes digital platform successful. 
  • Day two: You will explore adoption and pricing strategies for digital platforms. 
  • Day three: You will develop an understanding for platform openness and innovation, and explore how digital platforms can provide opportunities for organisations.  
  • Day four: You will delve into platform competition and regulation, understanding the implications of platform thinking for business strategy. 

To consolidate your learning, you will complete a reflective essay. The assignment will provide you with an opportunity to apply your learning to real life situations, allowing you to take back tangible knowledge that could support your organisation. 

What will you learn?

  • You will be able to demonstrate a broad understanding of platform strategy, and the implications of platform thinking for business strategy
  • You will develop the knowledge of how to build a successful platform for your own organisation or how to successfully work with external digital platforms in your role and have practical experience in applying specific platform concepts to case studies
  • You will gain an understanding of frameworks and tools that support the critical analysis of digital platforms, to understand how you can improve the use of digital platforms in your organisation either as a platform owner (building a platform) or platform participant (taking part in external digital platforms).

You can complete your Executive Diploma in just over one year, through four modules each studied over four days. If you need to, you have up to five years to complete your Executive Diploma. This is an accredited qualification, awarded by the University of Warwick.
